Mercedes Valentine, a 25-year-old model from Brighton, says an intimate moment in her hospital bed helped her cope mentally during a traumatic recovery from a life-changing motorbike accident.
After the crash left her with multiple serious injuries including a shattered pelvis, broken ribs, a fractured skull, and a smashed eye socket she spent a month confined to a hospital bed, where her boyfriend Mark, 34, played a central role in her care.
Mark, who worked at the hospital where she was admitted, was not only her emotional support but also her daily caregiver.

He cleaned her, changed her bedding, ensured she got her medication on time, and even took care of her pets outside of work. But it was an X-rated moment, prompted by Mercedes, that she says helped shift her focus away from the pain and isolation she felt.

“I felt so low being stuck in bed,” she said. “But when we had that moment together, it reminded me I was still me.
It made me feel human again.” While she admits the act didn’t relieve the physical pain, she says it gave her a mental and emotional boost during one of the darkest points in her recovery.
Their relationship had barely begun before the accident they had only been dating for a month when the crash happened.

Mark met Mercedes’ family for the first time at her bedside, as she lay with visible facial injuries. Despite the circumstances, he committed fully to her recovery, even reassuring her that he’d stay by her side no matter the outcome, including if she ended up in a wheelchair.
The accident and subsequent surgeries left Mercedes with lasting scars, both physical and emotional. After being discharged, she returned to social media, only to face comments about her appearance.

People questioned her weight and noticed the change in her eye, unaware of what she’d endured. That, she says, pushed her to share her story publicly.
Her most intense surgery involved her pelvis, which not only required extensive reconstruction but also caused internal damage.

The force of the impact rotated her uterus, displacing her birth control coil and requiring internal hardware to stabilise the area. The surgery left her with what she describes as her most difficult scar one that serves as a daily reminder of what she survived.
Despite the trauma, Mercedes says she’s grateful to be alive and credits Mark for being her anchor during the most vulnerable period of her life.
