A woman who turned her back on a promising career as a neuroscientist to become a pole dancer and stripper now earns more than her wealthy parents combined.
Mercedes Valentine, 21, from Brighton, has swapped a uniform of lab coats for saucy underwear – which has landed her a position in the top 0.1% of creators on adult content site OnlyFans.
Her journey to the pole began with a devastating health diagnosis.
After being diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome when she was 15, Mercedes was left wheelchair-bound and had to relearn how to walk again.
Two years of strenuous physical therapy later, she was mobile again and prepared to follow in her parents‘ footsteps by studying neuroscience at university.
But pumped with her new-found energy, she joined the university gym and signed up for weekly pole dancing lessons.
“Because of my condition, my joints are more bendy so I was able to pick pole dancing up pretty quick,” Mercedes, who has 134,000 followers on Instagram (@mercedesthedancerxo), told NudeNewz.

When she finished her degree, a friend from her pole dancing class suggested she give stripping a go at a local bar.
Mercedes has never looked back.
Since embarking on the world of stripping and OnlyFans – which sees her earning up to £1,000 a night – Mercedes has now earned more than her doctor parents’ £200,000 combined income.
“I have no regrets, I absolutely love it,” she said.
How Her Family Reacted

Mercedes admits her career choice came as a shock to her medical family.
“My parents are both doctors and know what I do but my dad can’t bring himself to say pole dancer and instead opts for ‘pole gymnastics’,” she said.
“I think at first they were a bit shocked I didn’t follow the path they had in mind for me.
“We’re a family of doctors and my sister is a lawyer so this is a bit different, but they’ve got used to it now and are really supportive.”
Mercedes began stripping in January 2020 and found she was a natural.
She said: “For the most part it is really fun – I basically walk around and wriggle my bum cheeks and I make hundreds of pounds a night.”
The Strangest Encounters
While she enjoys her line of work, Mercedes admits there have been some “strange encounters”.
“One time there was this couple and the guy seemed really quiet and shy,” she said.
“I tried to get him out of his shell and danced a little closer and started speaking to him. He tried to whisper in my ear but I couldn’t really hear him.
“When I turned around, he managed to press his nose into my bum. It was really weird, I wasn’t expecting it.”
She’s also had a customer tell her she looked like his daughter before trying it on with her.
“I felt a bit sick then,” she said.
But after two months of working as a stripper, the world went into lockdown due to Covid-19, leaving Mercedes without a source of income.
Why She Joined OnlyFans

Not keen on returning to the world of science, Mercedes created an OnlyFans account in April 2021 sharing raunchy content.
The platform has seen her earn over £200,000 and put her in the top 0.1 per cent of creators.
“It was great to be able to do that during the pandemic,” she said.
“I’ve mostly saved the money and haven’t splashed it around on expensive things.”
For Mercedes, the decision to capitalise on her career in adult content is driven by more than just money – it’s about making the most of her mobility while she can.
“If I’m able to use my now-functioning body to help set me up for life, then I will,” she said.
“I’m always scared that I’ll be back in a wheelchair by time I’m 30 and want to use my body.”
What’s Next for Mercedes

Despite her success in the adult industry, Mercedes hasn’t closed the door on her academic achievements.
She holds a first-class degree in neuroscience – a qualification she worked hard for and one that represents her determination to overcome her physical challenges.
“I’ve got a first-class degree in neuroscience – so it’s always something I can fall back on if I need to,” she said.
The Rise of Creator Economy Careers

Mercedes’ story reflects a wider trend of young people turning to platforms like OnlyFans to earn significant incomes – often surpassing traditional professional salaries.
The platform has transformed the adult content industry, allowing creators to work independently and keep a larger share of their earnings compared to traditional adult entertainment avenues.
For many creators, the appeal lies not just in the financial rewards but in the flexibility and control over their own content and working conditions.
Like other creators who have pivoted from conventional careers, Mercedes represents a generation redefining what professional success looks like – prioritising financial independence and personal fulfilment over traditional career paths.
Living with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a group of inherited disorders that affect connective tissues, primarily the skin, joints and blood vessel walls.
For Mercedes, the condition initially robbed her of her mobility as a teenager but ultimately contributed to her unexpected career success.
The increased joint flexibility that came with her condition became an asset in pole dancing, allowing her to master moves more quickly than many of her peers.
Her journey from wheelchair user to top-earning pole dancer and content creator serves as a testament to resilience and adapting to life’s unexpected turns.
