Most coverage of this industry is either breathless promotion or tabloid voyeurism. We’re starting something different: a recurring Creator AMA series, where working creators talk directly about how they’ve actually built a sustainable business – not the highlight reel, the real mechanics.
Why we’re doing this
The most useful information in this industry rarely comes from platforms’ own marketing or from outside journalism – it comes from creators talking to each other about what’s actually working. A recurring interview series lets us surface that kind of practical, lived experience directly, with real names (where creators want to be named) and real specifics, rather than more anonymous “creators say” trend pieces.
What we’ll actually ask
Every AMA in this series will work through a consistent set of themes, adapted to whoever we’re talking to:
- The business side most people don’t ask about – pricing decisions, how income actually broke down across platforms and revenue streams, and what surprised them financially in year one versus now.
- What retention and growth actually looked like in practice – which of the tactics that get repeated online (content calendars, fan segmentation, off-platform promotion) genuinely moved the needle for them, and which turned out to be overrated.
- The parts of the job nobody warns you about – the operational grind, the platform policy changes that forced a pivot, and how they’ve handled burnout, boundaries, or the parts of running this kind of business that don’t show up in a highlight reel.
- What they’d do differently – the honest, specific version of hindsight, not a generic “work hard” answer.
Want to be featured, or nominate someone?
We’re actively looking for creators – at any stage, any niche within this space – willing to talk candidly about the business side of their work. If that’s you, or someone whose approach to this business you respect, get in touch through our contact page. We’re especially interested in perspectives that don’t usually get airtime: creators managing this alongside another career, creators who’ve navigated a platform ban or policy shift, and creators further along who can speak to what actually changes once the business matures past the first year.
What’s next
Our first full interview will run as its own dedicated feature once scheduled. In the meantime, this series sits alongside our other Growth & Retention and Money & Business coverage – if you want the data and tactics side of this while we line up interviews, our pieces on real creator earnings by tier and platform comparisons are a good place to start.
