A physics PhD dropout who swapped studying lasers for launching an adult content career says she now earns up to £80,000 a month – and chooses to live in a yurt and go dumpster diving for fun.

Amelia, walked away from a fully funded doctorate programme researching how light interacts with matter to pursue a radically different path as an off-grid OnlyFans creator.

The former academic, who had been training to become a laser physicist, now runs her adult content business from a solar-powered yurt in rural Washington, US, hauling water by hand and heating with wood.

Despite her six-figure monthly earnings, she has deliberately rejected a conventional lifestyle – living in tents, foraging for food, and embracing what she calls “the anti-Kardashian” approach to online success.

“I’ve been described as the anti-Kardashian of OnlyFans,” said Amelia, who is known on Instagram as @ameliainthewoods.

“I’m not presenting a polished luxury fantasy.

“I’m building a real life off-grid, often in tents or a yurt, and experimenting with the boundaries of societal norms while running a high-income creator business from that world.”

The creator says the contrast between her income and lifestyle often baffles people.

She said: “I’ve had months where I’ve made six figures, and I still find myself doing things like dumpster diving for fun.

“To a lot of people, that doesn’t make sense.

“If you can earn that kind of money, why not buy a bigger house, a nicer car, and a more comfortable life?

“For me, the answer is simple: freedom.

“The goal was never luxury.

“The goal was having enough independence that I could wake up each day and decide how I wanted to live.”

Before her unconventional career pivot, Amelia was immersed in academia, studying optics and photonics with ambitions of becoming a laser physicist.

She said: “If you had asked anyone who knew me what my future looked like, they probably would have predicted a fairly traditional academic career.

“Creating content online was not something I had planned for, and it certainly wasn’t what people expected me to do.”

The decision to join OnlyFans came from a desire for complete independence.

She said: “What inspired me was the possibility of living entirely on my own terms.

“The platform offered something I hadn’t found elsewhere: the ability to build a business without gatekeepers deciding what my life should look like.

“The irony is that I left a path many people saw as stable and successful, only to end up making more money while living in a yurt.

“That’s a contradiction I’m perfectly happy with.”

Amelia’s content draws directly from her off-grid existence, featuring everything from hauling water and chopping wood to more unusual projects like making fish leather using traditional bark tanning methods.

She said: “I’ve been exploring some pretty unconventional natural crafts.

“I’ve even been experimenting with the idea of turning fish leather into handmade lingerie and bikinis.

“It’s slow, raw, and a little strange.”

Her nettle content has also unexpectedly resonated with fans.

She said: “I didn’t expect people to respond to it the way they did.

“There’s something about the sting, the texture, and the intensity of working with it that comes across as oddly sensual in a very natural, unpolished way.”

The creator says reactions to her career change have been “all over the place” – including from former academic colleagues.

She said: “Some people from my physics PhD programme have found my content, which was definitely surreal.

“Going from discussing laser physics with someone to realising they’ve seen your off-grid adult content online is a very strange crossover moment.”

Looking ahead, Amelia plans to continue building a life aligned with her values of independence and self-sufficiency.

She said: “I want to deepen the ‘real life’ side of my content – more projects like cob building, tanning, and seasonal living.

“The work continues to feel grounded in actual experience rather than performance.

“I can go from running a high-income online business through solar-powered Starlink to hauling water, chopping wood, and spending my time on physical work in nature.

“It’s not a luxury lifestyle, but it’s chosen.”
